Primary Purpose:

Underwriting Investigation Specialist will develop, implement, and manage all underwriting fraud programs, initiatives, and investigations within Direct Auto Insurance Group.  The Underwriting Investigation Specialist will utilize underwriting policies, state guidelines, insurance statutes, regulations and other resources to aid their investigation.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Able to analyze and investigate potentially suspect policy acquisition and claim scenarios involving material misrepresentation and tailor investigative steps necessary to verify or refute policy coverage.
  • Proactively identify new underwriting fraud investigative steps and prepare processes that detect and deter insurance fraud.
  • Responsible for evaluation and investigations of all assigned fraudulent policies.
  • Responsible for underwriting fraud training to Agency, Claims, Sales, Policy Services, and Underwriting.
  • Completes review of referred suspect policies in a timely fashion and provides summary of the policy action.
  • Works in coordination with Claims, Sales, Product Management, and SIU Staff on assigned investigations ensuring effective communication occurs through investigative steps.
  • Manages investigative expenses to ensure that the best cost loss avoidance is achieved in each investigation.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and to make critical business decisions effectively.



Minimum Skills and Competencies:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Solid knowledge of underwriting, claims and insurance industry theories and practices required
  • Three to five years underwriting or claims experience is typically required, depth and breadth of experience will be taken into consideration
  • Demonstrated technical expertise and product specific knowledge
  • Experience with commonly used investigative claims and policy databases
  • Knowledge of AS400 and Guidewire Claim Center systems strongly preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and writing skills. The ability to effectively interact with all levels of internal and external business partners
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Excel product as well as other business-related software
  • Professional designations (AIC, CPCU, FCLS) preferred
